The customs and traditions that you will find here were passed down naturally until about 1955, and bear a very close resemblance to old Jewish customs and traditions. The area was formerly named Herai Village and this is believed to have been derived from the word ?gHebrew?h. (The current name is Shingo Village). It is claimed that Christ arrived by sea at Hachinohe and changed his name to Hachinohe Taro, and the existence of an area and pond named Hattaro in Hachinohe is offered as proof of this (at present the pond is filled in). Furthermore, in this area there is a Bon Festival Dance called Nanyadoyara which many people are familiar with, although its meaning is unclear. It was formerly believed that in the past, Yanagida Kunio changed this song into the local dialect. However, a certain research group has since claimed that the meaning of Nanyadoyara is ?gA song to give glory to god?h in Hebrew. Within the local dialect, many words of Jewish origin have been incorporated unconsciously. There are other unique signs, such as the fact that one family?fs crest resembles the Star of David.

It takes about ten minutes to climb up to the top of the steep Pyramid Mountain
I?fve been interested in this area for over ten years now. When I take a stroll from Mayogatai to Shingo I really feel that my body and heart become soothed. Surely we Japanese have been in this area ever since before the far-off Jomon period?
